Ways to remember 9/11 in the workplace.
Hard to believe it has been 20 years since the terrorist attacks on America on September 11th, 2001. This year 9/11 will occur on a Saturday but I wanted to share my thoughts and offer ways to address this historical event in the workplace. While today's younger generation were babies, or not even born when 9/11 occurred, it is still important to pause, reflect and remember this significant day. Recent events in Afghanistan and the press coverage this year's anniversary is getting will be constant reminders for them but what can a leader do in the workplace?
Remembering is important. Tell your people it is supposed to haunt and hurt. "Lest we forget." If we choose to bury history we are doomed to repeat it. Today's generation holds the torch for our nation and learning from our past lights the way toward a better future. Here are some things you can do.
Say or send something. Do not let the day pass without some recognition of the event. At a minimum you can share a story, a patriotic image or just tell your people you are "remembering."
In a group, share stories. 9/11 impacted so many people. While it may not have impacted your people directly, they may know of someone impacted by the attacks. Ask each person to recall where they were or where their parents or loved ones were when the attacks occurred. Ask if they know anyone involved in our post-9/11 wars. Begin or end with a moment of silence.
Share an article or a video and discuss it as a group. Stepping away from the busyness of work is a great way to bond and foster trust in a team. Dedicate time to reading, watching and discussing this historic day.
Attend a 9/11 remembrance. There are countless ones and they are right in your neighborhood. Ask (don't force) your people to join you.
Find a veteran in your company or invite one in to have a discussion with your people about 9/11. Ask them where they were and how it impacted them. Ask them about their service following 9/11. You can even ask them about Afghanistan. I submit many veterans would be happy to share their thoughts on it. It could be therapeutic for them.
9/11 impacted people in various ways and people have differing opinions of our response to it. Avoid politics. Just focus on remembering the fallen but don't let the day pass by without some recognition and reflection.
Make it Personal!
