Protecting me from myself
As a senior Army Colonel, a mentor of mine helped me see myself by describing three people. The Mule, one who can handle a ton of work successfully but is usually immersed in the task unable to see the bigger picture. The Closer who could place the ribbon on a project and switch it on auto pilot. Closers get things done. The Visionary who thinks big and deep though struggles to get plans into action. Visionaries steer large organizations connecting grass-roots activity to strategic goals. Being a Visionary, I needed to keep a Closer and Mule nearby. Alone or surrounded by Visionaries like me, I and my organization would suffer. I took this counsel, logged it into my self-awareness bank and surrounded myself with people who could protect me from myself. Who are those that protect you from yourself?
