Take notes

"The palest ink is better than the best memory." Chinese Proverb

Have you ever had that waiter or waitress who takes your order without writing anything down? I lose confidence when that happens. I think to myself, "How can they memorize all that amidst the chaos of a restaurant?" I wonder if they are showing off. I know I could never do that. I suffer from CRS - can't remember shit. To this day, I still get burned when I do not write something down. I'll forget it and it will rear its ugly head at some point and bite me. Take notes.

I always considered taking notes as a sign of respect for what the other person was saying. Perhaps it was an Army thing displaying loyalty to the commander. When the boss spoke up, we would all open our Army green notebooks and write his or her every word. I know I always felt a bit angered when I was giving guidance and the recipient was not writing it down. I might even hand them one of the note cards I kept in my pocket as a way to penalize but also to teach them. It is not a practice I have carried into my encore life but I still expect such behavior.

Leaders do not have to act in a punishing way by handing a note card to a subordinate but they can promote the practice of note taking in other ways. As part of an initial briefing or guidance as they assume their leadership position, they can ask their people to take notes when they speak. "I'm going to work very hard at giving you the best guidance and direction I can. I would appreciate it if you took notes." Or leaders can state this up front when they are about to speak. "Please write this down." Lastly, leaders can ask their subordinates how they memorize information or how they capture guidance and act upon it. This is where note taking can be promoted as a practice.

Anyone can show interest and or loyalty by taking notes when spoken to. Indeed, leaders can and should take notes when their subordinates offer input and ideas. I take notes when I formally meet with someone. I am genuinely interested in what they have to say so I bring along my tablet and take notes but I also do this as a sign of courtesy and respect.

Perhaps I should bring that stack of note cards to the restaurant next time. Take notes.
