Can your team operate without you?

The mark of a good organization is one which can function without its leader. It is a goal every leader should strive for but it does not happen organically. On top of my leadership practice, I own and run a small business. I tested positive for COVID this weekend so it's time for the team to step up. Here was my guidance. "Team, the mark of a good organization is that it can operate successfully without its leader. We will be put to the test this week as I’ve tested positive for COVID, but I’ve no doubt we will rise to the occasion. I’ll send out some guidance before Monday via email to steer you. Rob"
My team has my full confidence. There are no guarantees that all will go well, after all, I do perform a critical function as the team's leader but my people are engaged employees and they are up to the task. I have full confidence in them. And I've mitigated risk. We have systems in place such as business operating systems which allow us to 'see' the organization and our customers in real time. We have meetings which synchronize us. I care for them. I'm their champion. I make a point to see them each day. We poke fun of each other, lightening the mood and building trust. Lastly, I'm not afraid to delegate.
Working these things on a daily basis will save the day when you, as a leader must be absent. COVID is just one example of things which may take you from your team. Are you ready?
